Horse Blanket Sizing: What to Check Before Buying

A horse blanket’s size is only one part of the fit. Before ordering a new or used blanket, compare its brand, cut, style and measurements with your horse’s needs and the manufacturer’s current size guide.

Use the brand’s measuring instructions

Use a soft measuring tape with your horse standing square and a helper if needed. Follow the manufacturer’s specified starting and ending points, then use that brand’s chart to select a size. Do not apply one universal rounding rule to every brand. The Horseware size guide includes its measuring method and size charts; other brands may use different conventions.

Know which type of blanket is listed

  • Turnout blanket or sheet: check the listed fabric, fill and weather-protection details.
  • Stable blanket or sheet: check the intended use; do not assume it provides turnout weather protection.
  • Cooler or quarter sheet: compare the design and measurements for its particular use.
  • Neck cover: confirm the size and attachment compatibility; it may be sold separately.

Read used-blanket details carefully

Check photos of closures, lining and straps, along with notes about tears, repairs and missing components. A blanket’s original model name does not confirm its present waterproofing or condition. Ask about any feature that is important to you but is not described.

Compare before checkout

Record the size of a blanket that currently fits, including its brand and model, and compare that information with the item listing. If you are unsure about fit, ask an experienced fitter before buying.
