Pony, Cob and Full: Comparing Bridle Sizes

Pony, cob, full and oversize are useful starting labels when shopping for bridles and halters. They are not a universal set of measurements. Compare actual dimensions and adjustment range, particularly when buying pre-owned equipment or replacement parts.

Start with a correctly fitted bridle

Record the brand, labelled size and the adjustment holes currently used. Compare corresponding pieces, including the browband, cheekpieces, crownpiece and noseband. Note whether measurements include buckles or other hardware so the comparison uses the same method.

Check what the listing includes

A headstall may be offered without reins or a bit. A browband, noseband or cheekpiece listing may be for a replacement part only. Read the title, description and photos together, and ask about any unclear component before ordering.

Check compatibility as well as size

  • Compare strap and buckle widths when mixing components.
  • Check the attachment type at the bit and reins.
  • Allow for the adjustment range your current setup needs.
  • For halters, compare the manufacturer’s size information separately from bridle sizing.

Ask for help with fit

Measurements help compare products, but they do not replace fitting the equipment on the horse. If you are changing the style or do not have a correctly fitted reference, consult a knowledgeable bridle fitter or trainer. Contact us for item-specific measurements that are missing from a listing.
